BUC Common CV Workshop

A Canadian Common CV (CCV) workshop will be held at Brescia in June, in anticipation of upcoming Summer and Fall Tri-Council grant opportunities, such as CIHR’s Foundation and Project grant programs. The CIHR Foundation grant Notice of Intent to Apply deadline is expected to be late July and will require some version of a CIHR CCV. The SSHRC Insight Grants competition in the Fall, will continue to use the “old” Web-based CV platform and has not been migrated to the Research Portal.

Workshop overview: A CCV is quite often a required attachment for primary applicants and co-applicants when applying for various grant opportunities that use online application interfaces (CIHR, SSHRC, NSERC etc.). The CCV allows researchers to have a single CV that they can use to apply to multiple agencies. Building and maintaining a CCV can also be a time-consuming task. Researchers/applicants should give themselves enough time to complete the CCV process. This workshop will include 1) an overview of the basics of registering and establishing a CCV using the online system; 2) how to select a funding CV type; 3) how the various CCVs are linked to grant application portals; 4) and other functional components of the CCV. Time will be reserved for specific questions.

Date: Tuesday June 7, 2016

Time: 9:30am – 11:00am

Location: Cypress Meeting Room (Clare Hall)

Western Research Workshops – NSERC Discovery Grant and CCV

Western is offering the following upcoming NSERC seminar and CCV workshops:

NSERC Discovery Grant Seminar-Application Preparation, Tips and Evaluation Criteria

“How to Prepare a Discovery Grant Application”

Presenter: Megan Rose-Martel, PhD
NSERC Program Officer, Research Grants and Scholarships

Date: Thursday, June 2, 2016
Time: 10:00 – 11:30 am (60 min presentation and Q&A)
Location: 3M Centre, Room 3250

Presentation Summary:
Megan Rose-Martel, NSERC Program Officer, will present an overview of the peer review process and advice will be given on how to prepare a Discovery Grant application. The workshop will cover topics such as Discovery Grant Evaluation Groups, criteria for evaluation and ratings, and tips on how to prepare an application. While the workshop will be most helpful to new faculty members and those preparing applications this Fall, all researchers are welcome to attend. A question period will follow the presentation.

CCV Information Sessions

In anticipation of major competitions this Fall that require the Canadian Common CV, Western Research Services is offering three CCV information sessions on campus this June and July. The major upcoming grant competitions include the CIHR Foundation and Project grants, and the NSERC Discovery grant, all of which will require a CCV.

Note: There are mandatory registration and Notification of Intent to Apply stages for both the CIHR Foundation grant and NSERC Discovery grant. The deadlines for the CIHR Foundation grant have not been officially announced, but it is expected to be sometime in late July. The NSERC deadline to apply is Monday, August 1 @8pm. A version of the CCV must accompany these submissions.

Anyone is welcome to attend any session. The sessions may be useful to those who haven’t had to use the CCV yet in applying for research funding. As the process can be time consuming, research staff recommend setting aside enough time in advance to complete the CCV process.

This info session will also take a look at the ResearchNet and Research Portal application submission systems.

Please RSVP to Louise Kilianski, louise.kilianski@uwo.ca indicating your name, department and which session you’d like to participate.

Connection Grants – Connecting for Canada’s 150th

As part of its Connection Grant program, SSHRC is offering the following opportunity as a way to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017:

“SSHRC is proud to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. All across the country and in a variety of ways, Canadians will be celebrating this historic occasion. We believe this anniversary is an opportunity to acknowledge and support scholarly or research-related activities which mobilize research about Canada at 150: its past, its present and its future.

Many milestones—social, political, cultural, economic—helped shape Canada as we know it today, and they continue to influence our leaders and impact our citizens from one generation to the next. Understanding these milestones, and their consequences, is the domain of the social sciences and humanities.

It is in that spirit that SSHRC is pleased to offer Connecting for Canada’s 150th, a unique series of Connection Grants to support one hundred and fiftieth anniversary-related initiatives organized by postsecondary institutions and scholars. These events or outreach activities should mark or celebrate this historic anniversary, enhancing our understanding of the social, cultural, technological, environmental and economic issues we face at 150.

This funding opportunity also provides support for connection activities which exemplify the contributions of Canadian institutions and researchers in social sciences and humanities, either to a discipline or to global fields of study.”

Application Process:

To be considered for funding under the Connecting for Canada’s 150th initiative, applicants must complete the application form and follow the accompanying instructions, as outlined in the Connection Grant funding opportunity description.

SSHRC will accept applications for this initiative for one of the following deadlines:

  • August 1, 2016;
  • November 1, 2016; and
  • February 1, 2017.

Professor FAQs
I submitted a project proposal and was not matched with a Globalink Research Intern. Why did this happen?
Globalink Research Interns may not be matched with a project due to one of the following:

  • Students have not selected the project during the application process.
  • Students do not have the appropriate skill set or experience to ensure a successful match with their selected project(s).
  • The number of applicants exceeds the number of placements possible with available Globalink Research Internship funding.

Can I nominate a specific international student to become a Globalink Research Intern and work on my research project?
No. Globalink Research Internships are highly competitive.  Students must apply during the call for student applications. If eligible for the program, students are further evaluated and shortlisted. Students can be matched with any project that best suits their research interests and experience.

What countries does the Globalink Research Internship partner with?
For 2017, we accept student applications from select universities in 9 countries: Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia.

Which disciplines is a Globalink Research Internship open to?
Globalink Research Internships are open to all academic disciplines including humanities, social sciences, and STEM disciplines.

I submitted a research project to Globalink for the summer of 2017. What is the status?
We are building the capacity to inform professors of the status of their application. Until this becomes available, please refer to our Globalink Cycle and Important Dates section.

Can I have more than one Globalink Research Intern placement per year?
Mitacs encourages professors to submit multiple projects, as this may increase the chance of a successful match. Placements are determined by student preference and as such, Mitacs cannot guarantee that projects will be matched until the final results are announced in January

Does the Globalink Research Internship provide funding for professors who host Globalink Research Interns?
No, we do not provide financial compensation to host faculty members. All funds are given to the student directly.

I’m a postdoctoral fellow.  Can I host a Globalink Research Intern?
In order to host a Globalink Research Intern, you must be an official faculty member at one of our participating institutions.

Can professors from any Canadian universities apply for Globalink Research Internships?
Yes, professors from all universities are eligible to apply.

Can a Globalink Research Intern conduct their research off campus?
Typically, Globalink Research Internships take place on the host institution’s campus.  Please contact the Globalink Research Internship team for special considerations at https://mitacs.freshdesk.com/
